This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers, 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Speakers

Alejandra “Alex” Warner

Architectural Engineering Access Specialist

Ms. Warner holds a Master of Science in Architectural Engineering and is a Certified Access Specialist Professional by the state of California, as well as a National Accessibility Professional Certification for the Built Environment. She recently retired after over 30 years of service with the City of San Diego, including 25 years dedicated to accessible design. She brings extensive knowledge and understanding of accessibility laws, codes, and regulations. She collaborated with various city departments, including Park and Recreation Engineering and Capital projects, Transportation, and Mobility, overseeing the Citywide ADA compliance program, and managing transition plans.  

Ms. Warner played a key role in the development of accessibility requirements for Park Design, Street Design, Complete Streets, and Curb Ramp Design Guidelines. Additionally, she integrated code changes and provided training to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations. Ms. Warner’s qualifications and experience highlight her expertise in accessible design. Beyond her previous role, she serves on the board of the California Certified Access Specialists Institute (CASI), where she helps coordinate the education program. She is also actively involved with the Regional Transportation Board and has presented at national conferences, sharing her insights on accessibility.

Course Title:  Curb Ramps: Understanding ADA Requirements And Applying Public Right-of-Way Guideline “PROWAG” to Curb Ramp Design

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This threee-hour course examines the legal and technical requirements for curb ramp design under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). Discussion includes available exceptions, construction tolerances, and considerations for historic preservation, unreasonable hardship, and technical infeasibility. The program also explores when right-of-way alterations trigger the need for curb ramps, methods for applying PROWAG technical standards, and practical solutions for common design challenges encountered in the field.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain ADA requirements for curb ramps and identify exceptions related to construction tolerances, technical infeasibility, and historic preservation.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to determine when alterations to the public right-of-way trigger the installation of curb ramps.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to apply PROWAG technical standards to curb ramp design and conduct field surveys to evaluate compliance.
