Nathan Forrest
Technical Director at California Nevada Cement AssociationMr. Forrest joined the CNCA in 2015 and serves as the Technical Director. Mr. Forrest’s function is to provide resources, recommendations, education, technical expertise, and other services to municipalities, engineers, project owners, developers, and contractors. His focus includes cement and concrete materials and applications for transportation, water conveyance, buildings, and other pieces of civil infrastructure.
Prior to his work with the CNCA, Mr. Forrest worked as a consulting materials engineer on numerous large Caltrans projects in Southern California, most recently on the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement in Long Beach. Mr. Forrest graduated from The University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Nathan is a licensed Civil Engineer in the state of California and maintains industry certifications from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure, The American Concrete Institute, The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, and others.
Outside of work, Mr. Forrest enjoys spending time with his wife and daughters, camping, playing golf, and riding bicycles.
Greg Halsted, P.E.
National Ready Mixed Concrete AssociationMr. Halsted is the Senior Director, Local Paving for the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) He is responsible for increasing the paving market share for ready mixed concrete products through promotion, design, technical services, and construction activities at the local, regional, and state level. Mr. Halsted has over 25 years of experience in the use of cement and concrete in the pavements and geotechnical industry. He has knowledge of planning, design, materials testing, construction, and sustainability; has participated in numerous training and construction workshops involving State and Provincial transportation agencies, Public Works departments, Universities, material suppliers, and consulting firms; and has authored several publications related to cement and concrete construction. He currently serves as a voting member of several Transportation Research Board (TRB), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and ASTM International (ASTM) standing technical committees. Mr. Halsted holds a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University and is a licensed engineer in the state of Georgia. Prior to joining NRMCA, he held civil and geotechnical engineering positions with the Portland Cement Association, the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, and the Georgia Department of Transportation

Course Title: Concrete Pavement Design, Construction and Maintenance

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course examines the principles, types, applications, technology, design, construction, preservation and rehabilitation of concrete pavement. The course begins by discussing the principles of pavement design and reviewing site preparation techniques. The course then analyzes the design and construction of continuously reinforced concrete pavement and jointed plain concrete pavement. The course also provides strategies for concrete pavement preservation and restoration.

Learners will be able to identify the types and applications of concrete pavement, discuss the terminology and technology, and reference the codes and standards.

Learners will be able to engage in site planning by improving grading and drainage and by making the appropriate subsurface preparations.

Learners will be able to discuss the applications, design methods, materials and installation of new continuously reinforced concrete pavement as well as of new jointed plain concrete pavement.

Learners will be able to utilize concrete pavement preservation and rehabilitation techniques such as spall repair, crack sealing, slab/lane replacement, hot mix asphalt overlay and more.
