Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar offers 7.0 PDHs to professional engineers and 7.0 HSW continuing
education hours to architects licensed in all states. These hours can be applied to ethics
requirements or general CE requirements.

Speakers

Bryan Hoskins, P.E. Ph.D

Associate Professor of Fire Protection & Safety at Oklahoma State University

Dr. Bryan Hoskins earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He also received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2011 with an emphasis on building egress. Dr. Hoskins spent one year working for Arup on projects primarily dealing with life safety design and people movement. He then spent two years working for the National Institute of Standards and Technology on projects dealing with building evacuations and emergency messaging. He is a registered fire protection engineer in the state of Oklahoma. Professor Hoskins is the chair of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) working group that developed a research roadmap for fire protection and is a member of the Human Behavior in Fire Task group for SFPE. He serves on multiple code and standards committees. He has authored more than 20 articles related to building evacuations and human behavior in fire.

Course Title: Complying with Fire Protection and Building Codes

Course Description: This seven-hour live lecture presentation examines fire protection and life safety design codes, occupancy classifications, means of egress, fire protection features and equipment, and code compliance.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify life safety and building codes which require fire protection and fire resistance features, including the International Fire Code and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes, and will know which codes apply to specific projects.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to define building occupancies and identify how changes of use and occupancy affect fire protection requirements.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to comply with requirements for fire protection features and equipment, including fire-resistant building materials, fire and smoke protection features, fire detection and alarm systems and sprinkler systems.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to participate in code compliance exercises, applying fire protection code requirements to new construction and to buildings undergoing changes in occupancy.
