Chris Abell

President of Rainbow Waterproofing & Restoration Co.

Mr. Abell has thirty-four years of experience as a contractor specializing in building façade restoration and waterproofing throughout California. Since joining Rainbow in 2001 as president, Rainbow has completed over 10,000 projects ranging from small leak repairs to restoring some of California’s most historically significant masonry and concrete structures. Mr. Abell prides himself on working collaboratively with the entire team on any given project, brainstorming ideas, and implementing solutions that benefit both the building and the client’s interests. From the inception of the San Francisco Building Facade Inspection and Maintenance Ordinance, Rainbow has provided access and support for architectural and engineering firms on over thirty properties. Mr. Abell is also the president of the Brick Layers and Allied Craft Workers Local 3 Pointer, Cleaner, Caulker Labor Management Cooperative Committee.

Carolyn L. Searls

Senior Principal, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

Ms. Searls has forty years of experience in investigation, design, and construction contract administration of building enclosure repairs on both historic and contemporary structures throughout the United States. In her career, she has investigated more than 1,000 buildings and structures. Ms. Searls has been recognized through speaking engagements, project commissions, and published papers as an expert in the field of preservation of masonry and concrete on historic buildings, in addition to her work in cladding and waterproofing systems on contemporary buildings. She was a member of the committee that drafted the façade inspection ordinance for the City of San Francisco.

Matthew S. Worster

Associate Principal, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.

Mr. Worster has twenty years of experience in the investigation, design, and construction phases of building enclosures. His projects include the historic and the contemporary, ranging from terra cotta to titanium panels. He assists owners, designers, and builders with traditional and modern waterproofing, roofing, and wall claddings. Mr. Worster holds an advanced degree specializing in structural materials, and he enjoys teaching his expertise. He is the ASTM task group chair for fenestration water testing and is on the Board of Directors for the California Preservation Foundation.

Course Description: This two-hour course will explain what building façade ordinances are, how they originated and their purpose. The course will delve into the specific inspection requirements and preparations for close-up exterior inspections, access methods, costs, inspection tools and techniques, and probe openings. The course will also discuss reporting requirements and the appropriate actions to take if unsafe conditions are found.
