Sean Armstrong
Electrification Consultant at Redwood Energy in Oakland, CAMr. Armstrong has worked in building electrification for 28 years, the last 12 as a consultant. He has designed more than 300 commercial buildings and 25,000 residences for low-income households to be all-electric and solar powered. Starting in 2018, Sean and his staff co-authored seven practical guides to building and transportation electrification and helped develop California’s pro-electrification, solar and battery Energy Codes. He has received design awards from the United Nations, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Southern California Building Industry Association and been inducted into the 2022 Clean Energy Hall of Fame by the California Energy Commission.

Course Title: All-Electric Commercial Buildings

Course Description: This six-hour course discusses the purpose and principles of building electrification, provides and explains codes and standards that promote electrification, and dives deep into the specific strategies and systems design professionals can use to electrify both new and existing buildings. The course concludes with case studies of electrified commercial buildings and multifamily housing.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to discuss the basics of building electrification such as costs and benefits, measure the carbon footprint of a new building, and explore strategies to decarbonize new and existing buildings.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to reference and comply with buildings codes as they relate to building electrification, including the IBC, IEC, and the IEBC.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to utilize electric heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and domestic hot water to electrify new commercial buildings, as well as energy management systems and EV charging.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to explore the electrification of existing buildings and utilize electric systems and components to improve energy efficiency.
