Wendy Talarico LEED AP

Ms. Talarico is an ICC-certified energy/green code plan reviewer and consults with architects and engineers throughout the Northeast to provide continuing education on a range of subjects from codes to building science. She is an instructor for Urban Green/New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s “Conquering the Code”, an 8-hour energy code class in New York State. Ms. Talarico was a member of the engineering outreach team for the Brick Industry Association, and she is an award-winning journalist with more than 25 years of experience as a writer and editor for such publications as Architectural Record and This Old House. Her areas of expertise include building energy, sustainability issues, and codes, including the IECC, ASHRAE 90.1, IEBC, and the IgCC.

Course Title: Complying with Commercial Provisions of the 2020 Energy Conservation Construction Code/Stretch Code of New York State

Course Description: This 7.5-hour course focuses on the provisions of and changes to the 2020 Energy Conservation Construction Code and Stretch Code of New York. The course will discuss code development, compliance pathways, thermal envelope design, building systems, existing and historic building additions and alterations, and New York Stretch Energy Code compliance strategies.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the development of the 2018 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and review the changes to the 2021 IECC, including to HVAC, service hot water and compliance pathways.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify the components needed to build a thermal envelope, including weather-resistive barriers, vapor barriers, air barriers and thermal barriers, and calculate insulation thickness and U factors.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to design building systems, additions and alterations that comply with the applicable energy codes, including with HVAC, service hot water, power and lighting.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to comply with the New York Stretch Energy Code 2020 by understanding when the Stretch Code is applicable, identifying amendments to 2018 IECC commercial provision and ASHRAE 90.1-2016, and looking forward to future developments in energy efficiency.
