Continuing Education Credit information
This seminar is open to the public and is designed to offer 6.0 CPD hours to professional engineers and 6.0 HSW continuing education hours to licensed architects in Ohio. 

 Ohio’s State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors does not pre-approve continuing education providers or activities. However, this course is designed to comply with Ohio’s continuing professional development laws. 

 Professionals seeking continuing education credits in other states will be able to claim the hours earned from this seminar, in most cases. Refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Speakers

Dr. Karen Mancl

Professor of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering and Water Quality Specialist at The Ohio State University
Dr. Mancl has published over 50 journal articles and 80 Extension publications on rural infrastructure and outreach initiatives. She is a nationally known expert in onsite wastewater treatment, having conducted research, written and taught the subject over 30 years.

Dr. Mancl is the past-president and now vice-president of the Ohio Onsite Wastewater Association. In 2013, Dr. Mancl constructed a teaching facility at a slaughterhouse in southwestern Ohio to teach low-cost, low-energy treatment of food processing wastewater. At this outdoor teaching and research facility, Dr. Mancl teaches designers, installers and regulators the science and technology of sand bioreactor wastewater treatment systems.

She is originally from Wisconsin where she received her bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Mancl has a master’s degree in Environmental Science from the University of Texas, and received her PhD degree in Water Resources from Iowa State University.
In 2010, she received a second MA Degree in East Asian Studies and conducts research and teaches wastewater treatment in rural China. In 2019, she received her third MA Degree in Public Policy and conducts research at the Woodrow Wilson Center – China Environment Forum on environmental policy in rural China.

Course Title: Ohio Septic System Short Course

Course Description: This six-hour live lecture presentation explores the functionality of septic systems and EPA and Ohio regulation of them, how they are designed, alternative treatment technology, and septic system inspections and maintenance.

Learners will be able to identify and describe the components of a septic system and explain how they work.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss how and why septic systems are regulated and viewed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the State of Ohio regulatory agencies.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and describe alternative wastewater treatment technologies, including mound systems, sand bioreactor systems (sand filter systems), and peat and textile filters.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explain why septic systems require periodic inspections and regular maintenance, they they will be able to cite troubleshooting techniques.
