This seminar and webcast are open to the public and are designed to qualify for 6.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 6.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in Wisconsin.
The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.0 HSW LUs (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the AIA/CES.
The International Code Council has approved this event for .6 CEUs in the specialty area of Fire (Preferred Provider No. 1232).
Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the event for those who attend the entire course and score a minimum 80% on the quiz that follows the course (multiple attempts allowed).

Certified Building Official CEO of Code Educational OpportunitiesMr. Karow is the CEO of Code Educational Opportunities providing education based on current building codes. He also provides service as a building code specialist for design professionals and stakeholders in the industry. Mr. Karow has an extensive background in developing and presenting various types of building code and related seminars. Previous career paths included staff instructor with the International Code Council and with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division. He has instructed in a Building Inspection Technology program at a local community college. Mr. Karow is a certified building official in Minnesota and holds ICC certifications as a Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Code Specialist.

Course Description: This six-hour course analyzes code-compliant fire-resistant design and construction. The course will closely examine exterior wall provisions, rated systems, penetrations, firestopping, opening protectives, ducts and air transfer openings, fire blocking and draft stopping.

Learners will be able to reference and comply with exterior wall provisions, utilize table 602 regarding rated exterior walls and projections for fire separation distance requirements, establish opening protectives and discuss parapets and exceptions.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to define, differentiate, and utilize fire rated systems such as fire walls, fire barriers, fire partitions, smoke barriers, smoke partitions, horizontal assemblies and more.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to utilize penetrations and firestops, including through penetrations, membrane penetrations, and firestopping systems.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explore design provisions related to ducts and air transfer openings and utilize fire dampers and smoke dampers.
