The Association of State Floodplain Managers has approved this course for 6.5 CECs for floodplain managers.

Mark D. Jones, P.E.
Principal, Hartech Engineering & Consulting, LLC, in Mechanicsburg, PAMr. Jones, P.E., is president of Hartech Engineering, which was founded in 2007 as a multi-discipline civil engineering consulting firm providing infrastructure, development, and municipal design services for the public and private sectors. Bringing over 30 years of engineering expertise along with specific state-of-the-art, computer-aided technology to achieve efficient, cost saving design solutions, he also provides hydrology and hydraulic studies and reports along with general civil engineering support for prime consultants to PennDOT or local municipality projects. Mr. Jones is a licensed pilot and studied Military Civil Engineering while serving in the U.S. Air Force and continues his master’s education locally through Penn State. He is also a registered professional engineer in the states of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Arizona, and Georgia.

Course Title: Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course provides design professionals with best management practices (BMPs) to prevent erosion and control sediment. The course begins with an analysis of NPDES rules and regulations and a review of the principles and practices of erosion prevention and sediment control. The course then provides and explains how to utilize specific structural BMPs (both temporary and permanent) and non-structural BMPs before concluding with a discussion on green engineering for streambank and shoreline stabilization.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to identify the causes of erosion, explain the importance of vegetation, and discuss the principles and practices of erosion prevention.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to utilize permanent, structural BMPs to prevent erosion and control sediment, including spillway protection, channel linings, and turf reinforcement matting.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to utilize temporary, structural BMPs to prevent erosion and control sediment, including silt fences, sediment traps, rock filters, erosion control blankets, and many more.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to utilize non-structural BMPs to prevent erosion and control sediment, including buffer zones, vegetated filter strips, chemical soil stabilization, and sodding.
