Continuing Education Credit Information
Climate Action for Architects and Engineers in New York State
This course is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers, 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours to landscape architects in New York.

HalfMoon Education is deemed an approved continuing education sponsor for New York engineers and architects via its registration with the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System and the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System (Regulations of the Commissioner §68.14(i)(2) and §69.6(i)(2)).

The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.5 LU|HSWs (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the AIA CES.

The Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System has approved this course for 6.5 HSW PDHs. Only full participation is reportable to the LA CES.

James A. D’Aloisio , P.E. LEED AP

Principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt in Syracuse

Mr. D’Aloisio is a principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt, a structural engineering, landscape architecture, and building envelope services firm in East Syracuse, New York. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a registered professional engineer in New York and Massachusetts. He is a member and past president (1997 – 1998) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Syracuse Section, and a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York State (SEAoNY). Mr. D’Aloisio is a member of ASCE/SEI’s Frost-Protected Shallow Foundations Committee, the Structural Condition Assessment of Existing Buildings Committee, and the Sustainability Committee. Mr. D’Aloisio received the Order of the Engineer at Syracuse University in 1997. His 30-plus years’ experience as a consulting structural engineer has primarily involved the design of new building structures, additions, and modifications, and analyses, assessments, and investigations of structures and facades. Mr. D’Aloisio has performed structural condition reviews of over 15 million square feet of buildings and he has performed over 150 structural forensic investigations. He has presented over 300 times.

Course Title: Climate Action for Architects and Engineers in New York State

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course explores practical steps that architects and engineers can take in their professional practice to mitigate the impacts of climate change on the natural and built environment. Topics include an overview of anthropogenic climate change, categories of actions architects and engineers can take, and mitigation vs. adaptation and resilience.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the greenhouse effect, and describe how various construction-related materials and activities influence the buildup of greenhouse gases.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss the role of the design and engineering community in the development of implementation of solutions, and differentiate between mitigation steps versus adaptation and resilience.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to analyze the effectiveness of different types of action and weigh activities that have an immediate short-term benefit against long-term effects.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe the costs and benefits of specific climate actions such as carbon reduction and geo-engineering, and discuss and reference case studies of example projects that implement various mitigative and adaptive actions.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to discuss New York State’s Climate Action Plan and its impact on architecture and engineering, as well as related organizations such as SE 2050 and Architecture 2030.
