This seminar is open to the public and offers 6.5 continuing education hours to engineers, architects, and landscape architects (HSW) in most states, including Virginia. Educators and courses are not subject to preapproval in Virginia.

This event has been approved by the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System for 6.5 LU|HSW (Sponsor No. J885) and by the Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System for 6.5 HSW PDHs. The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has approved this seminar for the following CEUs: 6.5 Certified Arborist, Municipal Specialist; 5.75 Climber Specialist, Utility Specialist, Aerial Lift; 3.25 BCMA Management; 2.0 BCMA Science; 1.25 BCMA Practice.

This course offers a non-credit continuing education opportunity to contraction contractors. It has not been preapproved in any state with contractor continuing education requirements.

Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the seminar for most individuals who complete the entire program. Attendance certificates not available at the seminar will be mailed to participants within fifteen business days.

John Palmer, BCMA

ISA Board Certified Master Arborist (#OH 6319B); ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified (TRAQ); Consultant, Lecturer, Author and Trainer.

Mr. Palmer is a Board Certified Master Arborist®. He is and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, by the International Society of Arboriculture, and he is a Consulting Arborist. He was the owner of a premium services landscaping company for 20 years. 

Mr. Palmer focus is on trees in urban and construction environments, soil deficiencies and the importance of soils for sustainable mature trees, increasing urban tree canopies by ensuring trees live to maturity, and unsustainable landscape designs. 

Mr. Palmer does tree assessments for individuals, commercial clients, law firms, insurance companies, municipalities, landscape architecture firms, parks and woodland management agencies, and he has assessed and evaluated thousands of individual trees in the past decade.

Course Title: The Tree Course: Science, Design, and Sustainability

Delivery Method: Live

Course Description: This is a 6.5 hour live lecture presentation with the instructors and students together in the same room. Bound written materials, authored by the faculty, will be distributed to all participants at the program. This course covers the scientific, economic and aesthetic value of trees, the key to healthy mature trees, trees as design elements, tree maintenance and threats to trees.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the elements required for healthy trees, including soil conditions, root development, necessary oxygen, minimal stress, and native versus non-native species selection.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe threats to trees, including those of biotic and abiotic nature, neglect, and lack of proactive measures.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to articulate the scientific, economic, and aesthetic benefits of trees.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify common site conditions that challenge survival and success of trees.
