Open Channel Flow
Two approaches to channel design
• Stable bed
• Unstable bed
Controlling channel erosion; stable bed
• Maximum permissible velocity
• Shear stress
Manning’s equation
Influence of Channel Linings
Channel linings (vegetation, RECPs, TRMs, hard linings)
Manning’s equation parameters
When Manning’s n is constant, n ≠ f(d)
Rock-lined channels, n = f(d, D50)
Vegetation-lined channels, n = f(V, R, vegetation)
Stable-Bed Design
Maximum permissible velocity designs
ChannelDsgnVmax.xls (made available by the instructor)
Stable-Bed Design
Shear-stress designs

Unstable-Bed Designs; Stream Restoration
Flow competence
Sediment transport
Flow Regimes
Subcritical flow

Continuing Education Credit Information
This seminar is open to the public and provides up to 6.5 PDHs to professional engineers, professional land surveyors, and professional geologists in most states, including Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania State Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists does not pre-approve continuing education actives.
This seminar is approved by the Landscape Architect Continuing Education System for 6.5 HSW PDHs.
HalfMoon Education is an approved continuing education sponsor for engineers in Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey (Approval No. 24GP00000700), New York (NYSED Sponsor No. 35), North Carolina, and North Dakota.

Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the seminar for most individuals who complete the entire program. Attendance certificates not available at the seminar will be mailed to participants within fifteen business days.
Speakers
Albert Jarrett
Dr. Jarrett is Professor Emeritus of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He has over 40 years of experience teaching and researching erosion and sediment control, water management, impoundment design, drainage, and stormwater management. Dr. Jarrett has taught soil and water management to engineers and non-engineers. He has prepared engineers for careers in the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the engineering consulting industry, especially land development projects with both stormwater and erosion and sediment control plans as required in Pennsylvania. Basic soils and water-movement elements of soil physics have been part of his courses. Dr. Jarrett is considered one of the leading erosion control researchers and has contributed many refereed publications, textbooks, and extension fact sheets relating to stormwater management and erosion and sediment control. He is a member of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) and a fellow in the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.
