Continuing Education Credit Information
This seminar is open to the public and offers a professional enrichment opportunity to Arizona architects and engineers. It will qualify for 7.0 HSW continuing education hours for architects and 7.0 PDHs for professional engineers in most states with continuing education requirements.

Attendance will be monitored, and attendance certificates will be available after the seminar for most individuals who complete the entire event. Attendance certificates not available at the seminar will be mailed to participants within fifteen business days.

David Smith
Building Official City of El Mirage
Mr. Smith has over 30 years of experience in code enforcement and holds currently 64 International Code Council (ICC) certifications. Among this list he is a master code professional, master of special inspections, combination plans examiner, combination inspector and certified fire marshal. In addition to the ICC certifications, he possesses three LEED AP certifications with the United States Green Building Council, a certified floodplain manager certification with the Association of State Floodplain Managers and an ACI concrete field testing technician-grade 1 certification with the American Concrete Institute (ACI). In Ohio, Mr. Smith has served as a building official and floodplain administrator for two municipalities and for one county consisting of three cities, 27 townships and seven villages. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he assisted the Building Department in the City of Gautier, Mississippi, in an intergovernmental emergency assistance program. In Arizona, he was appointed as the plans examiner and interim fire marshal for the City of Goodyear and now serves the City of El Mirage as the building official. Mr. Smith has participated as a subject matter expert for the Green Building Council Institute and was vice-president of the Building Officials Council of Northeast Ohio, an organization consisting of 380 members actively involved in the enforcement of building and fire codes. As vice-president, he was instrumental in creating bi-annual conferences for maintaining certifications with continual education.

Course Description: This seven-hour live lecture presentation examines code compliance challenges and opportunities with the International Existing Building Code, the scope and administration of the Code (Chapter 1), definitions (Chapter 2), compliance methods (Chapter 3), repairs (Chapter 4), classification of work (Chapter 6), alterations (Chapters 7-9), change of occupancy (Chapter 10), additions (Chapter 11), historic buildings (Chapter 12), and moved or relocated buildings (Chapter 14).

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify and discuss the challenges of maintaining and upgrading existing building stock to meet current safety and occupancy standards.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify and discuss the challenges of maintaining and upgrading existing building stock to meet current safety and occupancy standards.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to meet requirements for making changes of occupancy to existing buildings, complying with requirements for structural, electrical and mechanical work, along with fire protection requirements.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to comply with International Existing Building Code requirements on the height and area of additions to existing buildings, including the structural requirements for newly constructed spaces attached to existing buildings.
