Continuing Education Credit Information

This seminar is open to the public and offers 7.0 PDHs to professional engineers and 7.0 HSW continuing education hours to architects in most states, including Pennsylvania. Educators and courses are not subject to pre-approval in Pennsylvania.

Engineers and architects seeking continuing education credit in other states will be able to apply the hours earned at this seminar, in most cases. Refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility, which may depend on the code year states are under.

Robert J. Schutz PE PS CBO

Consulting Engineer & Code Instructor
Robert J. Schutz is a recently retired building official with the City of Columbus, Ohio. He was previously a senior staff engineer with the International Code Council in product development after several years as their manager of instructors in the ICC Training & Education Department. He has also served as an assistant architect administrator at the Ohio Board of Building Standards. While with the State of Ohio, he oversaw the new Residential Code of Ohio program, including certification of local residential code departments and personnel. His varied previous experiences include active military service during the 1980s as an Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) officer; building code enforcement for several central Ohio jurisdictions, including ten years as chief building official (CBO) for the City of Powell where he also served as city engineer and director of public services; and chief engineer for the Ohio Department of Health, where he chaired the state’s plumbing advisory board, was chief of plumbing and was a voting member on the Ohio Board of Building Standards.

Course Title: International building Code 2018

Delivery Method: Live

Course Description: This is a 7.0 hour live lecture presentation with the instructors and students together in the same room. It will be conducted in a handicap-accessible conference room with ample seating space and writing surface for all attendees. Bound written materials, authored by the faculty, will be distributed to all participants at the program. Attendance will be monitored and reported to AIA/CES. This course covers updates to the International Building Code for 2018, including provisions for building classification, occupancy and safety, building componenets, speciafic materials and construction techniques, interior construction, and safety requirements during construction.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to comply with 2018 IBC provisions for exterior walls, roof assemblies, structural design and soils and foundations.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to comply with 2018 IBC requirements for interior construction, including those for gypsum board and plaster, interior finishes, and interior environment.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to discuss 2018 IBC structure classifications and provisions for occupancy and special uses, fire resistance-rated construction, fire protection systems, and doors and windows.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to comply with 2018 IBC provisions for specific materials and construction techniques for concrete, masonry, wood, aluminum, steel, glass and glazing, and they will be able to comply with safety requirements during construction.
