Speakers

Jeffrey D. Vernon, MCP, CBO

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement, Charlotte, NC

Mr. Vernon is a master code professional and a certified building official, and he holds North Carolina Level III certifications in all five trades (building, electric, mechanical, plumbing and fire). Mr. Vernon has been working in the construction industry for 38 years beginning with a six-year stint in the US Army where he served in Germany, Honduras, Alabama and at the US Army Engineer School in Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He has worked in Prince William County in Virginia and in Lincoln, Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina. Through the years, he has been an inspector, a plan reviewer, a senior plan reviewer, and a department director among other job titles. Mr. Vernon is currently employed by Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement where he serves as the building code administrator. He has also been a part-time instructor at Central Piedmont Community College for the past ten years, and he serves as code consultant for University of North Carolina’s fifth year Architecture students. Mr. Vernon is also an ordained bishop.

Course Description: This 7.0 live, in person lecture presentation covering changes to the 2018 North Carolina Building Code, including changes affecting occupancy classifications, construction types, height, area, mixed use, podium buildings, fire resistance and protection, exit access, exit discharge, accessibility, interior environment, exterior walls, roofs, elevators, and wind loads.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to comply with North Carolina Building Code (NCBC) changes for occupancy classifications, rating types and construction materials found in Chapter 3 and 6.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to comply with North Carolina Building Code (NCBC) changes for building height, area, mixed uses, unlimited building areas, and podium buildings (Chapter 5).

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to comply with North Carolina Building Code (NCBC) changes for fire resistance and fire protection, including fire resistance ratings, markings, sprinklers, fire alarms and hoistway pressurization (Chapter 7 and 9).

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to comply with North Carolina Building Code (NCBC) changes for means of egress, including exit access, number and configuration of exits, communication, locking and latching mechanisms, corridors, egress balconies, exits, and exit discharge.
