Robert P. Schaffer, P.E.
WZG Structural Engineers, Zieglerville, PAMr. Schaffer is the Associate Principal at WZG Structural Engineers and has 20 years of experience in structural analysis and design throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. He is a graduate of Penn State University Architectural Engineering program with an emphasis in Structural Engineering and has project experience in commercial, higher education, industrial, pharmaceutical, hospital/life care and multi-family residential markets. In 2012, he was selected by Consulting Specifying Engineer Magazine as a Top 40 Under 40 for his achievements in structural engineering.

Course Description: This seven-hour live lecture presentation examines preliminary concepts of structural steel design, flexural members, compression members, tension members, combined forces and combined loads, connection design, and structural steel applications, including commercial and industrial buildings, residential buildings, parking structures and bridges.

Learners will be able distinguish between allowable stress design (ASD) and load and resistance factor design (LRFD) in the design of steel buildings.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe forces on structural steel members, including tension forces and compression forces.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe strategies for designing connections between structural steel members, including bolted connections and welded connections.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify appropriate applications for structural steel design and construction, including commercial and industrial buildings, parking structures and bridges.
