Jerome Johnson

Professor Emeritus, Engineering and Technology Department University of Wisconsin-Stout Menomonie, WI

Dr. Johnson served the University for 36 years in various roles including professor in the research and development discipline of the engineering and technology department, before retiring in 2021. During the last 20 years of his career at UW-Stout, he taught laboratory-based courses in design and product development to students in the following degree programs: engineering technology, construction, technology education, packaging, and manufacturing engineering. He also served as chair of the department, directed an outreach center whose purpose was to produce prototypes for inventors outside the university, and initiated the on-campus Fab Lab. Dr. Johnson began his career at the University as an instructor of engineering graphics. Prior to his appointment at UW-Stout he was a technology education instructor at Tomahawk High School in north central Wisconsin. He earned both his bachelor of science degree in industrial education (1981) and his master of science degree in vocational education (1984) from the University of Wisconsin-Stout. His Doctor of Education degree was earned at the University of Minnesota in vocational education (1991), now referred to as career and technical education.

Recent scholarly activity includes:

  • Toys for toddlers: A university, urban forestry board, and Lutheran school collaboration.
  • Benches from Ash–a community and university partnership.
  • Ash Tree Removal and Reuse for the City of Menomonie.
  • Implementation of Additive Manufacturing into Engineering and Engineering Technology Curriculum.
  • Shou Sugi Ban: methods, color, and characterization.
  • Analysis and development of Green Roof Structures.

Dr. Johnson spends much of his retirement at a cabin that he has rebuilt in northwest Wisconsin and a hunting shack in western Minnesota, which is in need of constant repair. He fishes in Wisconsin and hunts pheasants in Minnesota with his yellow Labrador Knute. Dr. Johnson’s two sons and their families, both living in Fargo, ND join him for occasional hunting weekends and trips to the cabin. They have blessed him and his wife Carleen with a total of 7 grandchildren, so far.
