Jessica Friederichs, AKBD

Founder Third Chapter Designs and Design Partner with Ashley Construction

Ms. Friederichs started her career as a Designer in 2017 when she founded Third Chapter Designs. Her role as Owner and Lead Designer encompassed all aspects of design and business management. Ms. Friederichs quickly grew the business and enjoyed helping clients build, renovate, and decorate their homes. Her clients included both homeowners and contractors. By 2019, Third Chapter Designs was a consistent subcontractor for Ashley Construction. In the subcontractor role, Ms. Friederichs provided a subset of design services that provided a structured and documented approach to completing all new home selections. After completing over 40 new custom homes together, She and Adam identified an opportunity to combine their efforts, create a true design-build company, and subsequently elevate the customer experience. In 2022, Jessica joined Ashley Construction full-time. Since then, design services have expanded and fully integrated into the custom home-building process. Ms. Friederichs design work won first in the category for three parade homes and Volume One’s Best in the Chippewa Valley for interior design twice. Her design work was also featured by Atmosphere Commercial Interiors. Since being with Ashley Construction, she has shared the “Best of the Chippewa Valley” award for New Home Construction. In addition to her experience, She holds a certificate in Kitchen and Bath Design from Century College and is a nationally accredited kitchen and bath designer. Ms. Friederichs diverse educational background also includes a bachelor’s degree in business administration from UW-Eau Claire, and certificates in Management Information Systems and Advanced Business Communication. Ms. Jones, was born and raised in Europe. Her intuitive sense of style started at a young age. European architecture and fashion are rooted in her design style. She studied studio arts in her home country of Montenegro where she learned principles of art and design. Ms. Jones, continued her design journey in Chicago, where she obtained a degree in Interior Design. Home has a special meaning to her. As she moved from Bosnia to Montenegro to the United States, home became more than the place where you live. She believes that home is a space where you feel safe, where all the visual appeal tells a story and where you love to be.

Stoyan Bumbalov Consulting 

Mr. Bumbalov joined the California Housing and Community Development’s State Housing Law (SHL) Program in 2010 and was part of the team responsible for the development and adoption of the California building codes related to residential buildings and structures. He acted as a subject matter expert in projects associated with the California Building Standards Code development and other rulemaking activities, and was the SHL Program manager for two years.

Mr. Bumbalov has 16 years of experience in developing, interpreting, and enforcing building standards in California and in Europe. For more than nine years he has spent a substantial amount of time with the development and modification of the California Residential Code, California Building Code (CBC), CALGreen, California Electrical Code, California Plumbing Code (CPC), California Mechanical Code, and many emergency regulations. His specialty and favorite topic for discussion for many years is housing accessibility. Since 2010, Mr. Bumbalov has spent a substantial amount of time with the modifications of Chapter 11A; he was the “go to” person for all interpretations pertaining to issues with housing accessibility. His daily duties also included technical expertise and interpretations on issues related to housing construction. Prior to his state service, Mr. Bumbalov was a building inspector and plans examiner for a local jurisdiction. His private sector experience includes five years as a building inspector, plans examiner, internal control engineer, and a third-party consultant in a company based in Europe.

Mr. Bumbalov is a certified access specialist (CASp), and since leaving HCD in August 2019, he has run his own consulting business. He consults with design professionals and developers on accessibility issues for new developments and existing facilities. Mr. Bumbalov is also involved with code development and the development of CASp exams as a subject matter expert. He possesses seven International Code Council certificates including accessibility plans examiner. He has a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

As a best-selling author, speaker, educator and accessibility strategist, Ms. Sawchuk is committed to forming positive, strong, and responsive relationships that help you create accessible spaces. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2015, she became aware of the everyday challenges of living in a world not built with accessibility in mind, and so began her journey as an accessibility strategist. Ms. Sawchuk earned the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification and launched Sawchuk Accessible Solutions, where she consults, completes accessibility ratings, and educates folks in the design and construction industry across Canada. In 2022, she was chosen by the Minister of Seniors and Accessibility to chair the review of the design of public spaces for the province of Ontario. Ms. Sawchuk was also a key member of the Canadian Standards Association’s Accessible Dwellings Technical Committee and is the vice chair of the Huron County Accessibility Advisory Committee. Whether it’s retrofitting an existing building or starting from scratch, she speaks to audiences of architects, facilities managers, engineers, and builders to achieve meaningful levels of accessibility for private homes, international airports, and everything in between.

Mr. Cawyer has coordinated over ten thousand accessibility-related plan reviews through the oversight of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, Architectural Barriers Division (TDLR-AB). As a registered accessibility specialist, he performs state-required accessibility plan reviews and on-site inspections. Licensed as an architect and interior designer in Texas, Mr. Cawyer also provides nationwide Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title III accessibility consulting, Fair Housing Act (FHA) consulting, lawsuit remediation, and expert witness services. He is a graduate of Abilene Christian University and Texas A&M University, holding a Master of Architecture degree in Building Design with a specialty in Healthcare Planning and Design. He is a graduate of the TDLR-AB Accessibility Academy and serves the citizens of Texas as a Registered Accessibility Specialist. Mr. Cawyer is also an active charter member and a past president of the nation-wide Accessibility Professionals Association (APA).

Kurt Haapala AIA LEED AP

He has completed residential projects for over a dozen college and university campuses across the west coast. He is a frequent presenter about student housing, equity and inclusion, sustainability and campus planning for organizations such as SCUP, ACUHO-i, NWACUHO, NACAS, APPA and AASHE. Cynthia Leibrock MA. ASID. Hon. IIDA

is an award winning author, an international lecturer, and a designer with over 30 years of experience. Her mission is to improve health, longevity and life quality through universal design. She is the principal/founder of EASY ACCESS TO HEALTH, LLC. The firm offers consulting services in patient centered design, planning for independent living, product analysis, and judiciary witness services. Prominent projects include The Betty Ford Center, the UCLA Medical Center, automotive interior design for Toyota, and a universal design exhibit for the Smithsonian (with Julia Child). In conjunction with Eva Maddox, she completed a showroom for the Kohler Company in which over a million consumers have learned about universal design, and a “living laboratory” in Fort Collins researching the environmental needs of older people. She offers keynote presentations and workshops internationally, including multiple lectures for many of the Fortune 500 companies. She has served as a lobbyist for people with mental disabilities, as a judiciary witness in code compliance and accessibility cost estimation, and as a research associate on the dean’s staff at Colorado State University. For the last 20 years she has taught courses in the architecture department at The Harvard University Graduate School of Design and has conducted healthcare design research in Scandinavia, Northern Europe and Japan. Numerous publications have resulted from her sponsored research including her books Design Details for Health, Beautiful Barrier Free: A Visual Guide to Accessibility, and Beautiful Universal Design, co-authored with James Evan Terry. Because of this work, she has twice been awarded the Polsky Prize for literature.

Krista Macy Assoc. AIA

is an Architectural Design Research Associate at the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access with experience in design for accessibility, sustainable and universal design. She is engaged in diverse research projects intended to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Her recent activities include designing home modifications, conducting accessibility and universal design assessments for industry partners, drafting literature reviews, and investigating the current state of climate resilience, home modifications and universal design in the U.S. She has co-authored several papers and publications including the design resources for the innovative solutions for Universal Design (isUD™).

Deborah Ann Rozell

is a certified interior designer and educator, national professional speaker, universal design specialist and president/owner of the firm Innovative Inclusive Design, LLC. As a residential and commercial interior design firm, Innovative Inclusive Design, LLC, designs interior environments that communicate their client’s personal style, are beautifully designed and universally accessible for all ages and stages of life. Innovative Inclusive Design’s most recent project was as the interior design firm for a development company building the first inclusive elevator townhome community with the standards of “Design for Life” in Montgomery County Maryland. Ms. Rozell is certified in Interior Design, Home Modification (ECHM) from UCLA, Aging in Place (CAPS) from the National Home Builders Association and holds a Special Education degree. She has received certificates from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in “Residential Design for Health and Longevity” and Harvard Graduate School of Education in “Learning Environments for Tomorrow” and Feng Shui.
